Am too young to have watched the great Leeds side but it seems to me that Revie got lucky at Leeds that a great group of young players were coming through and same as Southgate did he just happen to be in the right place at the right time?
Southgate has done nowt in management before getting the England gig but has great players. I don't think his tactics add anything to the team probably make it worse. So was Revie any good at tactics cos we seemed to lose a lot of big games, cup finals, semis, title deciders etc. When Clough came in he said he wanted to win but do it better and maybe a different manager would have won lots more with the players we had. Did Revie's superstitions also actually play on the players mind and make them full of doubts or nervous.
I know to a lot of fans wot I am saying would probably get me strung up but if twitter and facebook and social media was around back then would everyone have been criticising Revie?
Over to the old folk - no offense lol

Like you I was born too late to witness the Revie team first hand but it's certainly an interesting question. My opinion of Southgate in terms of tactics is very low and he certainly has benefitted from having an excellent group of players to choose from as well as other usually strong teams being in real decline, Italy yesterday having a West Ham reject up front and then bringing on an Everton reject later- it says something that Willy Gnonto, if fit, would be more likely to be in the Italy starting line-up than ours.
It is so hardto know with Revie as I don't think he managed any other team before us and his time in charge of England didn't last long so there is no real opportunity to see how he did elsewhere. If you take Fergie for example he did brilliantly at Aberdeen, breaking up the old firm monopoly, so it wasn't like he just proved himself at MU after having loads of money to spend. People question Pep and say it is all about the money but he gets more out of his superstars than other managers seem to, especially their neighbours who have spent more yet achieved far less in recent times.
Hopefully some older fans wil join the forum soon and can add their thoughts.
