I think we looked a bit jaded defensively but I wonder if that was down to Gray, Rodon and Ampadu all having international games. Byram probably had his worst game for us. Maybe though we need to give Norwich credit as they look to have some decent players, don't forget they probably still have a few players that featured in their championship winning teams. It is probably a good wake-up for us as we have seen little quality in the opposition teams this season and probably the 3 best teams we have faced, Southampton, Norwich and Ipswich have scored 8 goals against us. Whilst our attack has the ability to blow teams away we probably aren't at the same level defensively.
Piroe against Duffy was simply a mismatch for defending corners. I hate man marking at corners. As a team you are asking for trouble as every defending player has to try to watch for where their man is as well as watching where the ball is. It gives the advantage to the attackers who are able to just focus on attacking the ball and if they have a good set piece taker they should know where the ball is going to be going and likely have worked on it in training. When I was a player manager I switched my team so that I had our 3 best header(er)s of the ball basically positioned to attack the ball in a zonal system. We conceded just 1 goal from corners in several seasons - when we had some new players come in and we played a match where I forgot to go over the zonal bit and we man marked we conceded 3 in 1 game.
Rutter is playing great but he needs to start scoring some goals. If he keeps going at the rate he is he is going to struggle to get double figures. I'm hopeful that something wil click and he will suddenly go on a scoring run, he looks like he has the ability to do it. Throughout our team we look to have players who can score great goals rather than being great goalscorers. Hopefully Piroe is the metronome that will keep scoring at a steady rate.
I think we could see a lot of games like the Norwich one where we fail to score from several good chances and then concede.
Full marks to Farke for really going for it. Crazy to see how many attacking players we had on the pitch at the same time but far better than Marsch who seemed to pre-plan his subs simply to give players minutes rather than reacting to the match situation.
